Étudiants non-traditionnels
Nontraditional students need more diversity in academic services, study finds – A new study argues that institutions need to diversify their services to better suit their non-traditional students. Non-traditional students have traits such as having one or more dependents, not having a traditional high school diploma, and being employed full-time. About 75% of undergraduates from 2011–12 were found to have at least one non-traditional characteristic, compared to the 70% from 1995–96. The study brief states that “examining nontraditional characteristics is important […] because students with these characteristics can be vulnerable to challenges that can affect their well-being, levels of stress and satisfaction, and likelihood of persisting and attaining a degree.” eCampusNews | NCES Brief

US colleges enrolling more students with prior PSE credentials – A growing number of US college students have prior PSE credentials, according to a new report by the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. The percentage of college graduates accumulating credentials by, for example, adding a bachelor’s degree to an associate degree or certificate, grew from 25% to 29% between 2010–11 and 2013–14. The report also indicated that colleges are coming to rely on this “credential stacking” due to a slip in the number of first-time college graduates, which fell 2.1% in 2012–13 and another 1.3% in 2013–14. NB Student Alliance calls for reinvestment of tuition rebate cuts – Members of the New Brunswick Student Alliance (NBSA) have expressed frustration over the province’s delay in reinvesting funds left over from the elimination of the New Brunswick Tuition Rebate (NBTR). NB announced six months ago that it would eliminate the rebate, but it has reportedly not delivered any further details on what it will do with the $22.4 M saved by the cut. NBSA Executive Director Lindsay Handren said, “the New Brunswick Tuition Rebate was by no means the perfect program, and we understand the rationale for its elimination. … However, to be standing here six months out with no reinvestment of those funds back into financial aid—or clear plan in place to do so—is extremely worrisome. » NBSA
