Teaching and Education (Report 4: Working Conditions for Professors in Quebec Universities)

2016. This report focuses on the most visible aspect of a professor's work: teaching and education. How do professors view this component of their workload? What specific challenges are associated with it? Other than time spent in the classroom, what is involved in teaching at the university level? Why do teaching and education seem to be on the bottom rung of the mission of universities? This report will attempt to shed light on these and other issues.

Teaching and training (Issue 4: the status of professors in Quebec universities)

2016. Historically, teaching has been at the heart of the professorial function. Based on research carried out with 145 professors from ten Quebec universities, this booklet highlights how the conditions under which teaching is carried out have changed in recent years, with the paradoxical consequence of marginalizing this component of the job while at the same time making it more onerous. In a context of austerity and the priority given to research-creation, the devaluation of teaching in the professorial career rubs shoulders with the composition of larger classes requiring adapted pedagogical strategies, and the reduction in resources allocated to guarantee the best quality. These phenomena are accompanied by a proliferation of out-of-class activities, amplified by the booming use of digital technologies, and the emergence of a commercial logic that distorts the meaning of this activity.

Research and creation (Report 3: Working Conditions for Professors in Quebec Universities)

2015. University professors are passionate about, but increasingly frustrated with, research and creation. Based on the results of a study of 145 professors in ten Quebec universities, this publication demonstrates how central research-creation is to the academic workload, as well as the issues that go along with it: frantic competition for funding, unhealthy competitiveness among colleagues, cumbersome administrative processes, targeted funding, funding that is held by a minority and whose allocation is controlled by a few colleagues, manipulation of activities by senior university administrators in order to compensate for small operating and capital budgets, etc. These issues require collective action.

Research and creation (Issue 3: The status of professors in Quebec universities)

2015. University professors are passionate about, but increasingly frustrated by, research and creation. Based on a survey of 145 professors at ten Quebec universities, this booklet bears witness to the centrality of this component of the professorial task, and to the excesses that accompany it: unbridled race for grants and unhealthy competition between colleagues, cumbersome administrative procedures and targeted funding, monopolization of funding by a minority and control of dissemination bodies by certain colleagues, instrumentalization of activities by senior administrators to compensate for low operating and capital budgets, and so on. These are all shortcomings that call for collective responses.

Collegiality and Management (Report 2: Working Conditions for Professors in Quebec Universities)

2015. Collegiality is a fundamental principle of university management. Based on the results of a study of 145 professors in ten Quebec universities, this publication outlines, through many first-hand accounts, the ways in which collegiality is present in universities on a daily basis. Lapses in collegiality and many other current issues in universities require collective action.

Collegiality and Management (Issue 2: The Status of Professors in Quebec Universities)

2015. Collegiality is an essential principle of university management. Based on research carried out at ten Quebec universities, this booklet presents a wide range of examples of how collegiality is practiced on a daily basis. Numerous problems and abuses within today's university call for collective action.

The Juggling Act (Report 1: Working Conditions for Professors in Quebec Universities)

2015. This brief report focuses on professors' work as a whole, including the working conditions that are valued and the difficulties associated with juggling various professional demands in addition to one's personal life. Which working conditions matter most to professors? What is leading so many of them to experience work overload, high levels of stress, and low job satisfaction? What are the consequences of this overload on individuals, their work, and their health?

Le défi des conciliations (Fascicule 1: la condition professorale dans les universités québécoises)

2014. The result of a survey of 145 professors at ten Quebec universities, this booklet outlines some of the most appreciated aspects of their work, but also lifts the veil on the pitfalls it entails: overload, fragmentation of work, promotion conditions and bureaucratization. The lived consequences of these realities call for action.
