The Fédération québécoise des professeures et professeurs d’université (FQPPU) is excited to announce the appointment of Nil Ataogul as its new Advisor for Mobilization and Labour Relations.
With nearly 20 years of experience as a union expert, Nil brings innovative ideas and valuable expertise in mobilization, labour relations, and union training to the Federation. In her new role, she will develop strategies to strengthen the connection between the FQPPU and its members while advocating for fair working conditions and encouraging active engagement.
A Rich History With Unions
Nil Ataogul’s journey in unionism is both impressive and longstanding. It began during her studies at UQAM, where she served as the Vice-President for External Affairs of the Association facultaire de sciences politiques et de droit (AFESPED). She made her mark as one of the spokespersons during the 2005 student strike and later became the President of the Syndicat des étudiant·es employé·es de l’Université du Québec à Montréal (SÉTUE). These early experiences highlight her ability to defend the rights of her peers and act effectively in times of crisis.
After completing her studies, Nil joined the Centrale des syndicats du Québec (CSQ) in 2008 as a union advisor. She led several unionization and consolidation campaigns in this role, particularly within the education sector. One of her most notable achievements at the CSQ was coordinating the unionization of 14,000 family daycare workers. This extensive campaign resulted in the creation of a special law governing their negotiations. This project demonstrated her capacity to lead large-scale initiatives and effectively mobilize significant groups of workers.
Growing Responsibilities and Strategic Vision
In 2014, Nil was promoted to Director of the Service de l’action terrain at the CSQ. In this role, she led an overhaul of the CSQ’s training program, collaborating with 13 federations representing over 200,000 members. She also managed union renewal projects to foster a sense of belonging and recognition among the CSQ’s grassroots members.
In 2018, Nil joined the United Food and Commercial Workers union (UFCW), where she implemented innovative unionization strategies. Responsible for organizing new sectors, she successfully coordinated the unionization of more than 2,400 members across 20 workplaces and negotiated several collective agreements. This experience in the private sector allowed her to explore new negotiation and union representation approaches.
A Strong Commitment to FQPPU’s Values
In her new role at the FQPPU, Nil Ataogul will concentrate on engaging faculty members and enhancing labour relations. She plans to create action plans to strengthen member unions and tackle crucial academic challenges, including job precarity, working conditions, and faculty rights. Her solution-oriented approach and ability to excel under pressure will make her a valuable ally for FQPPU members.
Nil Ataogul joins the FQPPU with a genuine commitment to solidarity, equity, and the defence of rights in the academic sector. She sees this position as a return to her academic roots, allowing her to fully utilize her skills to advocate for the interests of university professors. Her career demonstrates a deep dedication to social justice and workers’ rights—values at the core of the FQPPU’s mission.
The FQPPU is confident that Nil Ataogul’s experience and determination, which will enhance member mobilization and improve labour relations with renewed expertise.
